The Pilot's Log: A tribute to Captain Caneman.
I've been pretty busy lately and haven't had a lot of time for doing anything new here. One of the things I've been busy with is my flight training. I am finally going to finish what I stared ten years ago and get my Private Pilot's License. Today I took off on my first unsupervised solo flight.
The point of this is to build my confidence while flying alone.
Of course, there were quite a few goals I had to achieve; slow flight, steep turns, stalls, pattern flying, radio communication, etc. In the midst of all this I managed to find the time to make a little video of myself.
I should take this opportunity to mention a video I saw a couple of years back.
A pilot called "Captain Caneman" made a movie of himself flying a DC8 air freighter back up from Guatemala, into Miami. Personally I found the commentary of his experiences in the captain's seat to be rather amusing. Amusing enough, in fact, to inspire me to create my own take on it. I decided that, if I ever had half the chance, I would give it a shot. Today, I had that chance.
I knew the camera would not be able to pick up my voice over the noise from the engine. So I brought along my laptop, which I plugged into the plane's intercom. Then, with a little help from Cool Edit, and some work on Movie Maker, I had my own personal piloting video. I admit I don't think mine is as funny as Caneman's, but I think all my friends should enjoy it.
Now at least, they'll know I not full of crap when I talk about flying. ;-)

That was like really good man. I didn't ever think you were full of crap. I'm very proud of you for finishing what you started, even though it was many years ago. You have gone through alot of things that would have broken alot of people including me, again I'm proud of you keep it up.
Pretty Dang Smooth. What a cool tribute to stumble on in the middle of the night. You did a great job !
Thanks for thinking about me. Keep Um Flying. The one and only Caneman - DC8 Captain.
Wow! I never would have thought, Caneman himself! This is quite an honor.
Well sir, thank you very much for the adulation. It was a lot of fun to make, and I hope to do a few more like it in the near future.
Thanks for the great post!
I'm sooooo happy for you Danny!! Great video, was so cool to see you all by yourself in that plane! Congrats!
Daniel, How is your flying coming along. It's almost eight years since you posted this video. Its still very meaningful for me. Hope your well. Caneman
Daniel. It's been almost eight years since you posted his video. I still enjoy it and it's very flattering to me that you made it. How is your flying coming along? The one and only not to be forgotten Caneman :)

Well, hello again!
First of all, I must sincerely apologize for taking so long to respond. This has been a busy week for me. Between family, spiritual necessities, and work, I scarcely have time to sit down.
Second of all, holy molé! Has it been eight years?! Man, time flies! (pun partially intended)
Well, I've got to say, that really gives me the warm and fuzzies to know that you still really appreciate my little homage.
As for my flying, I got my private pilot certificate about a year after making that video. There were a few starts and stops, and a trip to Europe, interspersed in there. I did have plans to continue pursuing my instrument, and commercial ratings, and work toward a flying career.
However, toward the end of 2008 I met a remarkable young lady named Chanel.
I should take this moment to point out that I had been married before. Unfortunately, after only about a year and 10 months of marriage, she passed away suddenly. I went through a few years of grief, and then resolution and acceptance. After all that time I was looking around again, and that is when I met Chanel. Frankly, she's a bada$$. After meeting a lot of young women who, in one way or another left quite a bit to be desired, I knew I'd found one in a million.
After dating for a while we decided to get married and start a family. She has always been supportive of my flying, but kids do put a strain on the finances. I manage to squeeze some flying in here and there, though not as often as I'd like. As a consolation prize I work for an airport, so I am still in aviation, and I am constantly around aircraft. That of course allows me to blend my passion for flying with my love for photography. If you're interested, I have an Instagram profile just for my work at the airport. "Airfield_Ops_DTO". Look me up and give me a shout. I'd be thrilled to hear from you! 😉👍🏻
Hey dude, I miss Caneman too.
Nice to read the above comments from him.
Keep living the dream brother!
